Food Bank Makes Efficiency Accessible

Each kit will allow users to save up to 300 kilowatt hours of electricity a year and $60 in energy costs.

BC Hydro and the Surrey Food Bank have partnered to distribute free energy saving kits to the food bank’s clients. Each kit will allow users to save up to 300 kilowatt hours of electricity a year and $60 in energy costs.

“We know that cost can be barrier to implementing energy-saving measures, especially if you are hesitant to make an investment in a home you don’t own,” said Lisa Coltart, executive director of Power Smart and Customer Care for BC Hydro.

“Thanks to our partnership with the Surrey Food Bank, the kits help make energy efficiency more accessible to our low-income customers in Surrey by making products available at no cost.”

Each kit contains approximately $75 worth of energy efficiency products that are easy to use and install, like compact fluorescent light bulbs, water-saving shower heads, faucet aerators and weatherstripping.

“The Surrey Food Bank is pleased to partner with BC Hydro,” said Marilyn Herrman, executive director of the Surrey Food Bank. “Power Smart is a worthwhile program which will help our clients save a few dollars to purchase much needed food as well as learn more about how their family can save energy in their homes.”

BC Hydro representatives will be at the Surrey Food Bank to distribute the kits directly to customers who qualify from May 3-7 and on May 10, 11, 13 and 14.

Customers are encouraged to bring their most recent BC Hydro bill to help with the qualification process.

Since 2008, through its Low Income Housing program, BC Hydro has distributed more than 22,000 energy saving kits to low income customers provincewide. To be eligible for a free kit you must be a BC Hydro residential account holder and meet the income qualification criteria.

BC Hydro also offers its low-income customers the Energy Conservation Assistance Program which features a free in-home energy evaluation, the installation of energy saving products and personalized energy advice.

Customers are encouraged to call 1-877-431-9463 to find out if they qualify for either program.
